How to Declutter Your Storage Unit

02/20/2023

Have you not gone to your storage unit since you moved the items in or is it in such a disarray you cannot find anything? Then it is time to do some cleaning and these steps can help you sift through the unwanted items.

Inventory What is Stored

Take a mental note or write down the contents inside, whether you inherited the items, got it at auction, need it for a rainy day or you just not idea what is in that box. Inventorying what you have will help create a plan of action for how much and how long it will take to clean out. We suggest creating an open space, like a path to help navigate through the storage unit. If the boxes are not labeled, quickly inventory the items, and note if they are valuable, fragile, or personally significant.

Sort Items

The Four-Box Declutter Method is the most effective way to sort through items. Making four separate piles and designating them as keep, sell, trash, or donate:

  • The keep pile will sort things that will stay inside the storage unit.
  • A sell pile will designate items to be sold for profit.
  • Trash pile will include items that are broken or have missing parts.
  • The final pile is a donate pile, which will include anything that could be of value to someone else.

After establishing four distinctive piles, ask yourself these four questions to determine which pile is most appropriate for the item:

  • 1. Have I used this in the last 6 months?
  • 2. Can someone else get more use than I can?
  • 3. Would I notice this if it were gone?
  • 4. Would I repurchase this item?
Pack Smarter
  • Combine like items within boxes and plastic tubs.
  • Boxes that are not completely full, combine with other like items to reduce the number of boxes stored.
  • Any item that can be taken apart, do so to allow for more room.
  • Stack all boxes and plastic tubs based on their fragility.
  • Store all boxes and plastic tubs based on the accessibility.
  • If the boxes or plastic tubs are not labeled, now is a good time to do so.
  • Leave a pathway within the storage unit to allow for ease of mobility.
Pointers
  • 1. Do not try and take on the whole unit in one day. Start by sorting through one section of the storage unit.
  • 2. Have a spot for each item within the unit and when they are removed.
  • 3. Challenge yourself to purge unneeded items and junk, so when you go to move out of the storage unit it is less to transport.

How to Store Winter Clothing

07/18/2023

Here in Florida we experience Winter a few weeks out of the year. Now that it is reaching in the high 80’s it is time to clear up some space in your closet that has been housing Winter clothing items. Rocker’s Lockers has a few ideas that will reduce the clutter in your home.

Vacuum Bags

Space saver vacuum bags are sealed and reduce the amount of needed space by 50%. Thick sweaters and bulky pants take up a lot of space, not to mention the puffy coats. Just place the clothing items in a bag and suck out all the air. The compressed bags are then stackable and ready to be easily stored.

Plastic Storage Containers

Durable and light weight, plastic storage containers area ideal for ensuring the safety of your items. Cardboard boxes are more affordable, but they can be easily torn or squished. Using clear containers makes it easier to access items as opposed to rummaging through boxes.

Self-Storage Unit

When packing away all your Winter clothing items, there may not be any room at your house to keep it. If that is the case, Rocker’s Lockers has the answer, with a storage unit, you will have all the room at home and all your item stored away.

Final Thoughts

We recommend before storing any clothing always wash and dry them, either machine wash or dry clean. It is important to clean the clothing before storing because our skin’s oils, perfumes and lotions can create visible stains and yellowing.

Before storing it is a good time to make any necessary repairs such as a broken zipper, a missing button or fixing a tear. This would ensure that all items are in working order for the next Winter season.
